"You’re at a Parisian café, and you’re reading your Sartre book and you’re reading Le Monde and you’re thinking of the big issues of the world and you see there’s a dog under the table next to you and you pet the dog. You don’t suddenly become stupid when you pet the dog."

The photograph above, as well as many other incredible photographs will be sold tonight for a great cause: Christie’s is raising funds with an auction of contemporary photojournalism prints for the three children of Anton Hammerl, a photojournalist killed in Libya last year.

Our primary goal is to raise funds to ensure Anton’s three young children’s receive the best university education possible. Anton was the family’s primary breadwinner. He had no employer and no insurance. Beyond that we want to highlight the key role that photojournalists play in bringing information to viewers worldwide and the risks they take to fulfill it. Freelancers photographers in particular often assume these risks alone. In that respect Anton’s story is emblematic of the challenges faced by the most vulnerable photojournalists.

"When people didn’t rally around Dead Prez, I knew the black hip-hop audience had become far less politicized. I just don’t know if Americans give a damn about anything past a shopping mall. And that’s all Americans on all levels. I can’t expect rappers to be politicized when Americans are not socially motivated enough to care about their own lives and public policy as much as they were even 20 years ago. But I’m compelled to make the music I make regardless."

- Killer Mike talks about the evolution of hip-hop’s relationship with politics in our latest feature interview.
